Everything you need to know about UAE Wills
Yes. A Will made in your home country is unlikely to be recognised by UAE courts for assets located in the UAE. Without a UAE-registered Will, Sharia inheritance law applies by default — even for non-Muslims. A UAE Will specifically covers your UAE-based assets and ensures your wishes are legally enforceable here.
Your UAE assets — including bank accounts, property, investments and vehicles — will be distributed according to Sharia law. This means fixed shares go to specific relatives, your bank accounts may be frozen for months or years, and a UAE court will decide who cares for your children. The process can take 1–5 years and cost tens of thousands of dirhams.
A DIFC Will is registered with the Dubai International Financial Centre Courts and primarily covers assets in Dubai. An ADJD Will is registered with the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department and covers assets across all seven UAE Emirates, including Abu Dhabi. ADJD Wills are also available to both Muslims and non-Muslims, whereas DIFC Wills are currently only available to non-Muslims.
The entire process — from initial consultation to a fully registered Will — typically takes 5–10 working days. The consultation itself is around 20 minutes, and we handle all the drafting, translation and registration on your behalf. You only need to attend one appointment.
Yes. Mirror Wills are one of our most popular services. They are separate Wills for each spouse that mirror each other's terms — typically leaving everything to the surviving partner and naming the same guardians for children. Both DIFC and ADJD offer mirror Will registration at reduced combined government fees.
A UAE Will can cover all your UAE-located assets including real estate, bank accounts, investments, vehicles, personal possessions, business interests and shares. It also allows you to appoint guardians for your minor children. Assets located outside the UAE should be covered by a separate Will in the relevant jurisdiction.
Absolutely. Life changes — marriage, divorce, new children, property purchases — often require a Will update. Both DIFC and ADJD allow you to amend or replace your registered Will. We recommend reviewing your Will every 2–3 years or whenever your circumstances change significantly.
Yes. Muslim expats can register a Will through the ADJD, which accommodates both Sharia-compliant and non-Sharia distribution preferences for non-UAE nationals. This gives Muslim expats the ability to plan their estate according to their wishes while remaining within the UAE legal framework. DIFC Wills are currently only available to non-Muslims.
Yes, the initial 20-minute consultation is completely free and carries no obligation. During the call, a UAE Will specialist will review your situation, explain which type of Will is best for you (DIFC, ADJD or both), outline the costs involved, and answer any questions you have. There is no pressure to proceed.
For ADJD Wills, you generally need to attend one in-person appointment at the notary. For DIFC Wills, registration can sometimes be handled remotely depending on your circumstances. We handle all preparation work remotely, so the in-person requirement is minimal — typically just a single visit.
